As Marko is a Black character, I highly encourage Black and African-American voice actors to audition for this role.
Marko is a human soul living under the "protection" of Lord Belac, for whom he sings in a high-end restaurant.
He is defiant, sharp-tongued, and refuses to be seen as a mere victim. He has developed a cynical and ironic shell to survive being the only human living among demons.
For his speaking voice, think mid-to-low range, with a sharp and cynical edge. He's weary of his situation but not broken. There's a fire and defiance in his tone.
Note: This character is foul-mouthed and often curses. If you’re uncomfortable with this, please let me know.
(Irritated) "You all play at aristocracy while everything around you rots."
(Weary) "This cage is gilded, I'll give him that. But my soul is still mine.”
(Melancholic, tired; bitter) “I can almost remember the smell of rain on earth. Not this... endless scent of ash and iron.”
