Class Session 1
LilTentoe for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Your tone is on point. I could hear that the portion of the script that was more sentence heavy as opposed to listing was easier for you to read and allowed you to show case more expression and a conversational tone. I imagine that's where you will shine!
Haha yeah the listing portion was kind of a struggle lol. But thank you for taking the time to listen and for the kind words! 🙏🏾
Great read! I could hear in your read that you were smiling and having fun with the script! This is excellent and something that casting directors look for. They love finding people who are fun to work with and will not be afraid to play. This quality/skill goes a long way!
I could definitely picture you in commercials, character work, or video games among other places in voice acting genres.
0:02 I hear “style” instead of “styles”. The words that have “s” at the end and “s” at the beginning of the next one can be challenging. A good way to ensure you pronounce the entire word is to slow down a little so you can comfortably leave enough space to say both words naturally.
0:16, 0:30, 0:48, 0:54, 1:25 Added the word “and”. Be aware/careful of adding words into the script. Some scripts have more leeway than others in how accurate the read needs to be. For example, commercial or medical scripts may have been run through the legal department and they may not want any changes from what was written. If you go back and listen to your recording, look for any changed, missing, or added words in the script. Finding the errors as you practice will help you improve your cold reading skills as well.
0:57 When you misread or have a little stumble (happens to everyone and it’s okay!), it’s highly encouraged to start again at the beginning of the sentence or paragraph or a good pause point that would make it easy to remove and replace the mistake during editing. If you just keep going and don’t return to a solid point that makes it easy to edit out the mistake, you may need to come back later and re-record as a pick-up, and it becomes challenging to make it sound the same as the original recording. So, a good rule of thumb is to record so that it’s easy to edit later. When the mistakes are then edited out, it will sound like you read everything perfectly. Also, when making corrections, be sure to take a moment and recenter yourself before re-recording the line. This will help to ensure you leave enough space in the recording to give yourself room to edit out the mistake later.
1:41 Added the word “a”.
1:45 Added the word “an”.
Having the microphone input pointed at your mouth but offset to one side maybe 20-30 degrees can help reduce plosives - as would adding a pop filter if you don’t already have one. Generally a good distance between the microphone and your mouth as you are recording, as a rule of thumb, is the space between your pinky and thumb when they are extended apart from each other.
Staying well hydrated will help to reduce mouth clicks during recording. A good rule of thumb is to hydrate well a couple of hours before recording and drink water in between as you’re recording to stay hydrated.
As you progress with voice acting, investing in the RX series mouth declick plug-in is a very useful and worthwhile tool to have at your disposal to help keep the recording as clean as possible.
For the purpose of this homework to work on projection, I felt you did well with it overall. Just be careful about dropping the volume/energy level as you proceed in your sentences. I noticed several areas where the energy dropped off at the end but picked back up at the beginning of the next line. Practicing your SOVT exercises will help to increase your stamina.
Overall, excellent work!
Thank you so much for the in depth feedback and for the encouragement! I'll make sure to keep all of your tips and critiques in mind for next time. Much appreciated fam 🙏🏾
