Class Session 1
Jax Verlen for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
good recording! my only pointers that i would give is: try to bring a bit more energy since you aren't doing a hard sell like tv commercial were back in the day and youre in a gymnasium to present a (product).
Good tone. I liked "some restrictions may apply" and "just right for your budget". Your pronunciation of "genuine' was a fun bit of color in a technical piece.
Really nicely done! I could definitely picture you doing commercials, e-learning, corporate reads, etc.
The energy was a little low. Generally for auditions if you give a lower energy read like this for your first take, the second take, give it a ten scale energetic read (or generally higher energy/excited read) to show your range. Casting directors like to know you can go the distance with the energy level. It’s easier for them to reel people in and bring the energy down than it is to try to get people to increase the energy.
You can also add a smile while you read - this will add warmth to the read.
For actual gigs and auditions, you’ll want to cut out the breath at the very beginning of your read. A good way to do this is to take your breath, pause a moment and hit record and proceed with the read. Or, if you’re already recording, take your breath and pause that moment before reading. This gives you room to edit it out later. Try to keep your beginning room tone to about 0.5 seconds or so.
0:05 I hear “style” - I think you may have said “styles”, but the words that have “s” at the end and “s” at the beginning of the next one can be challenging. A good way to ensure you pronounce the entire word is to slow down a little so you can comfortably leave enough space to say both words naturally.
0:22 Read “appraisals” instead of “appraisal”. Be aware of changing words and dropping or adding “s”.
0:38 Read “entrée” as “entry”.
2:14 Mispronounced “genuine”. However, I could see the way you pronounced it being used in a character read for added flavor.
Nice work with pausing when you made a mistake and going back to a good point of pause to start recording again. This makes editing easier later.
For the purpose of this homework to work on projection, I feel like there was room to go much further. Practice projecting even more such as with the scenario of being in a gym or large auditorium with no microphone and you need your voice to be heard in every single corner of the room. Engage with your diaphragm and take in a big, deep breath to fill up your lungs so that you have the power to push your voice out even further. You can turn the gain down a bit if you feel it will be too loud during recording to keep it from clipping. Try to have waveform peaks for yelling/loud projection land between -9 dB and -3 dB. For normal talking, try to have the waveform peaks between -12 and -6 dB. Shoot for -3dB of headroom. You may need to adjust your gain for louder and quieter parts; if so, it helps to know where to turn the gain to in order to achieve optimal levels during recording.
Keep up the great work!
