For the first part, I imagined the character realized what they had unleashed to the world and is starting to panic, trying to stop the spread of the disease at all costs.

For the second part while addressing the audience, I imagine it them trying not to lose hope as they were trying to better humanity. But the sad truth is that they are the culprits on what happend.
