The Superman Lives script is ridiculously good. First, Metropolis and Clark’s life are established. He is deeply in love with Lois Lane. Clark wants what he can never have: a normal life and a marriage. He proposes. It’s a deep, beautiful, melancholic subplot.
Brainiac arrives from deep space, with plans to conquer Earth. He begins to analyze everything. Superman is identified as the only being who can stop him. Lex Luthor is identified as Brainiac's best possible ally. Brainiac seeks Luthor out and offers a deal. Brainiac bioengineers and creates Doomsday to defeat Superman. Before deploying this monstrosity, he blocks out the sun with a massive energy shield.
The script ends with Superman and Lois, together but still unable to ride off into the sunset. Beautiful. Kevin Smith was the right guy at the right time. Everything was set and approved, that is... until Tim Burton came on board as director and killed Smith’s script for Superman Lives.
