Good read.

Nice start on your backstory and context for this scene. Think deeper on the scene. How many students are in the class? What do they look like? What is their reaction to what you’re saying and what they are watching? Are they horrified? Bored? Sleeping? Attentive? Our audience’s reaction will impact how we speak the words and our own reaction. And think about this - how do you feel about the information you are sharing? If you are bored, your audience will likely be bored. If you’re excited, that excitement rubs off on your audience and gets them interested too.

Your read sounded very flat and unemotional. Very matter-of-fact. You mentioned in your comments that you were trying to inform the students and get them interested in history. Was your read having an effect of getting them interested? Make use of change-ups in emotion, inflection, pacing, volume, pitch, etc. Adding even more emotion into your read can really help draw listeners in and let them feel what you are feeling through emotions and opinions being portrayed.

You’re on the right track, however it still feels like a read rather than someone speaking the words genuinely or convincingly. This is a challenging skill to acquire, but the more you practice the easier it will become. Make the scene real in your mind’s eye, and let yourself genuinely respond to the situation. This will help lift the words off the page. VA 201 goes into more of the emotional rollercoaster in voice acting, which is excellent, and VA 301 goes into more about different established acting techniques. Great classes to help you continue to advance in your voice acting career.

Keep up the good work!
