Class Session 5
Gerald M for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Good read.
And good work with developing the context of the scene. To take it further - What is your role in this scene? What does the soldier look like? Why are you the one speaking to this space soldier? How does the space soldier react to what you are telling them? The audience reaction can influence how we deliver the lines. Add in an emotional layer. How do you feel about this topic? How does your audience feel about it? How are they emotionally reacting to what’s being said?
You’re on the right track, however it still feels like a read rather than someone speaking the words genuinely or convincingly. This is a challenging skill to acquire, but the more you practice the easier it will become. Picture the scene you’ve created and how the person or persons you are talking to are reacting. Make it real in your mind’s eye, and let yourself genuinely respond to the situation. This will help lift the words off the page. Make use of change-ups in emotion, inflection, pacing, volume, pitch, etc. Keep it interesting to listen to. Look for ways to keep it realistic in a setting like this. Have an opinion about what you read.
VA 201 goes into more of the emotional rollercoaster in voice acting, which is excellent, and VA 301 goes into more about different established acting techniques. Great classes to help you continue to advance in your voice acting career.
Don’t be afraid to put even more energy and emotions into the read and have an opinion on what you’re saying. Often what we think is over the top or too much, really isn’t. So, go for it. Put the energy and enthusiasm into it. You can always dial it back if it’s really too much, but do a take that’s over the top and see how it sounds.
Keep up the good work!
