Class Session 3
Sam for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Really nice read! Overall it sounded very heartfelt and genuine/authentic. Well done!
Your audio seems to be a little on the quiet side. You may want to raise the gain a little more so that your normal talking peaks are between -18 dB and -6dB and your yelling/loud talking falls between -9 dB and -3 dB.
0:06 read “miss” instead of “missus”. There is a difference between “Ms., Miss, and “Mrs.”. A small point, but important for differentiation. :) (This comment applies to all instances where Mrs. was written in the script.)
0:07 I hear “Nill-more” instead of “Nill-i-more” (This comment applies to all instances where Nillimore was written in the script.)
0:17 read “memories” instead of “moments”
0:21 read “good” instead of “great”
0:49 “marshmallow” sounds a little odd like perhaps the “r” was not pronounced. When you misread (happens to everyone and it’s okay!), it’s highly encouraged to start again at the beginning of the sentence or paragraph or a point that would make it easy to remove and replace the mistake during editing. If you just keep going and don’t return to a solid point that makes it easy to edit out the mistake, you may need to come back later and re-record, and it becomes challenging to make it sound the same as the original recording. So, a good rule of thumb is to record so that it’s easy to edit later.
1:06 read “I often” instead of “often I”
Don’t be afraid to practice reading the script a few or several times to become more familiar and comfortable with the script. And then, quality check it after recording. Compare what you recorded with what was written and look at the details - were any words changed, added or missed? The more you practice improving the quality of your reads and your skill in cold reading, the easier voice acting becomes and the less editing and/or pick-ups that will need to occur on the back end.
As voice actors, we need to have the ability to clearly speak all of the written words so that they are understood. I encourage you to continue practicing your articulation and enunciation to further sharpen your skills. When practicing these qualities, it’s okay to go overboard and really hit all of the letters. Make sure you don’t lose the ends of words too when practicing these qualities as well. In natural speaking, the ends tend to fall off or not be hit hard, but exercising and strengthening the quality to fully pronounce words is an excellent tool to have in your tool box. You can try over-enunciating and over-articulating like Burger showed in Class 2 with the cork trick. Keep practicing and it will get easier. :)
The tongue twisters will also help so keep having fun playing around with those as well. Vocal warmups help loosen the tongue and vocal cords and will make it easier to pronounce the words.
Lastly, per Burger’s request in the homework: Who was the audience you were speaking to?
Keep up the great work!
