Class Session 3
Cyrus for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Yo you did the sponsor part at the beginning really good! I was having trouble with the word "scrumptiously" but you flowed it really well!
Nice read! Good projection! I felt you also did nicely with your articulation and enunciation overall!
1:01 Might be worth another take if you find yourself tripping a little on the words or hitting odd pacing
1:28 I hear some distortion in your audio indicating you may have peaked/clipped. A trick is to “ride the gain” if you expect you might be getting louder, turn your gain down a little bit to accommodate for the extra loudness, and then turn it back up to normal as you return to normal talking. Making these “real time” adjustments to your gain could save you another take or pick-ups potentially. It’s a skill and worth practicing.
1:46 Be careful about rushing through your words and running them together - it’s okay to speak fast, but make sure they are still all well-spoken and fully pronounced.
I particularly enjoyed the part where you let loose and had fun with it toward the end of the third paragraph when Fauscher gets hit. When you are having fun, it comes through in your recordings! This is one of the secrets to booking more work! If you’re not having fun, your listeners probably aren’t going to enjoy it much either. (Granted, there is a time and a place for serious reads.)
Now that you’ve identified an audience, take it even further. Instead of a faceless audience, think of one specific person in particular you are speaking to and imagine they are in the room with you. Think about the who, what, where, why, when, how of the scene to bring it to life even further.
Much of your read felt like a script read, which is great for practice! To take it to the next level, think about how fast things happen in sports in real time. Imagine the scene playing out in your mind - you are seeing all these actions and then you are reacting to them naturally while quickly explaining it to your audience. How would a live event announcer have spoken these words? Think about how you can make your performance feel authentic and genuine.
When you’re ready to take the next step to improve your voiceover recording, you will want to look into treating your recording space with acoustic foam and/or blankets to help reduce the reflections and reverb in the space by covering any hard, flat reflective surfaces. It’s not necessary for this class however as we are focusing on the basics of voice acting.
Keep up the good work!
