Class Session 1
Jenni H for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Nice work!
If you are using a USB or XLR microphone, it sounds like your gain is set a little too high (too hot), so back that down. If you’re recording on a phone or another device and don’t have the ability to adjust the gain/volume of the recording, then you can also put a little more distance between yourself and the recording device to help balance the levels. Feel free to reach out to me via DM on Discord if you would like some help dialing in the levels. You’ll want your normal talking peaks between -18 dB and -6dB and your yelling/loud talking between -9 dB and -3 dB.
0:43, 1:40, 2:04 read “purchase” instead of “purchases” - minor word change
1:11 When you misread (happens to everyone and it’s okay!), it’s highly encouraged to start again at the beginning of the sentence or paragraph or a point that would make it easy to remove and replace the mistake during editing. If you just keep going and don’t return to a solid point that makes it easy to edit out the mistake, you may need to come back later and re-record, and it becomes challenging to make it sound the same as the original recording. So, a good rule of thumb is to record so that it’s easy to edit later.
1:16 To take things to the next level, ensure that any repeated words or similar patterns stay different by using change-ups and variation to keep things interesting.
1:20, 2:02 It sounds kind of like you were bumping a microphone during the recording? If this happens during a normal audition or when submitting lines for an actual gig, you will want to re-record that section as it is difficult to edit it out after the fact. Ideally, you should not hold the microphone when recording - it’s good to have it on a boom arm or desktop stand. Shockmounts are also helpful to reduce movement of the microphone during recording.
1:35 As you progress on your voice acting journey, you’ll want to edit out any background noise if possible including mouth noises and sniffles to make your files as clean as possible. Just something to bear in mind as you progress and gain more experience. For this class we’re just learning the basics so it’s all good and the practice is invaluable!
1:36 There were a lot of skipped/missed words in this sentence, “A classic, deluxe, custom, designer, luxury, prestige, high quality, premium, select, gourmet, pocket pencil sharpener!”
1:49 inserted word “of”
1:53 missed words: “high quality, premium, select, gourmet”. When reading auditions in general, do pay attention to not changing words in the copy for at least one of your takes. It’s okay to make some changes or play around with the script and include improv, but it’s also important to be able to read copy as written - after all, the writer may have chosen the wording in the script for a particular reason and could possibly be offended at having it changed by someone just hired to voice it - so just bear that in mind.
For the purpose of this homework to work on projection, I felt that you did an excellent job practicing this quality and you did so consistently throughout your read. Well done!
Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for all of the very valuable insights and recommendations!
