Class Session 1
angelina-e for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Nice smooth read! Good use of variation and change-ups in your read. In general, the enunciation and articulation was pretty good, just a few words here and there could have been more clear. I loved the smile and warmth you brought to the script!
Your audio is a little low. Try increasing your gain so that your normal talking peaks are between -18 dB and -6dB and your yelling/loud talking falls between -9 dB and -3 dB.
0:01 The words that have “s” at the end and “s” at the beginning of the next one can be challenging. A good way to ensure you pronounce the entire word is to slow down a little so you can comfortably leave enough space to say both words naturally.
0:33 “Entrée” was read as “entry”. Be careful about changing the words in the script. :)
0:36, 1:36, 2:07 “purchase” instead of “purchases” - minor word change
0:58 some of the words were slurred or murmured for “not available, some assembly required” - be aware of enunciation and articulation to ensure your words are all clearly spoken.
1:12 I can’t hear the “d” in “experienced” - make sure you pronounce the word completely.
1:22 read “our” instead of “your”. When reading auditions in general, do pay attention to not changing words in the copy for at least one of your takes. It’s okay to make some changes or play around with the script and include improv, but it’s also important to be able to read copy as written - after all, the writer may have chosen the wording in the script for a particular reason and could possibly be offended at having it changed by someone just hired to voice it - so just bear that in mind.
2:04 mispronounced “vinyl”. Don’t be afraid to look up how to pronounce words online if you aren’t familiar with them. Some great reference sources include: Cambridge Dictionary (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/), youglish.com, and forvo.com and You Tube Videos among other places (there’s a lot of options out there). You can simply type in “How to pronounce [word]” in Google search and it should give you several references.
Try adjusting your microphone so that you speak just passed the mic at a slight offset to limit plosives. Adding a pop filter will also help with this to a degree if you don’t already have one.
Have confidence in your read - people want to hear what you have to say and you’re the “expert” on the copy/script. :) If you need to read it a couple/few times to feel more confident in the script then that’s perfectly okay - just record all the takes and choose the best one(s) when submitting.
For the purpose of this homework to work on projection, I felt that you have room for improvement as this script was read in a low speaking voice. Think about the scene of being in a gym or large auditorium with no microphone and you need your voice to be heard in every single corner of the room. Engage with your diaphragm and take in a big, deep breath to fill up your lungs so that you have the power to push your voice out.
Keep up the good work!
