Class Session 1
Cyrus for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
For the purpose of this homework to work on projection, I felt you did an excellent job of working on this quality.
At the beginning and end, it sounds like you hit the microphone. If this happens during a normal audition or when submitting lines for an actual gig, please re-record that section as it is difficult to edit it out after the fact. Ideally, you should not hold the microphone when recording - it’s good to have it on a boom arm or desktop stand. Shockmounts are also helpful to reduce movement of the microphone during recording.
Overall, it sounds like your gain was a little too high and/or you were a little too close to the microphone. Suggest lowering the gain and adjusting your position so that your peaks for yelling/loud projection land between -9 dB and -3 dB. Try adjusting your microphone so that you speak just passed the mic at a slight offset to limit plosives. Adding a pop filter will also help with this to a degree if you don’t already have one.
It’s okay to slow down your read - be sure to read at a pace where you can clearly enunciate and fully pronounce all of the words rather than just trying to get through the whole thing. Practice reading out loud and focusing on enunciation - the more you do it the easier it will become.
0:01 - 0:12, 0:15, 0:26, 0:32, 0:38, 0:50, 1:01, 1:05, 1:34, 1:35 Several of your words were slurred and not fully, clearly pronounced.(i.e. service, saving performance, hospitality, affordable prices, money back, estimates, purchases necessary, order, batteries not included, demonstration, don’t forget to pick up your, premium, asking, no purchases necessary)
0:13 read “appraisals” rather than “appraisal” minor word change
0:25 “Entrée” was read as “entry”. Be careful about changing the words in the script. :)
0:27 missed the word “on” in “no one will call on you”
0:31 missed the word “though”
1:03 “classic” word was not fully pronounced - be aware of enunciation to fully pronounce the words when reading as a voice actor including the ending sounds when applicable
1:15 “act” not fully pronounced
1:37 You kind of lost your breath a little on the “you” in “thank you” at the end. Be sure to finish the words completely before stopping.
The main feedback to work on would be your articulation and enunciation. It’s very important for voice actors to be able to speak clearly - even when speaking quickly so that our words can be understood. That said, overall, you did an excellent job with the script and maintained the energy all the way through. With the slight improvement for clarity of your words, this type of read would be very good for disclaimers in commercials, and also lends well to old-school announcer type reads.
Nice job! Keep up the good work!
WOW out the door, I couldn't reach the volume control fast enough. I think you nailed projection without a doubt.
