Captain Ramirez stared at the smoldering wreckage of the alien ship, her pulse thudding in her ears. “I said disable the engine, not vaporize the damn bridge!” she snapped. From behind her, the alien liaison tilted his head. His translucent skin shimmered blue, and his voice clicked and warbled through the translator. “I… apol-o-gize, Captain. My people… are not known for half-measures.” Ramirez clenched her jaw, already regretting the alliance. Then came the voice of her lieutenant, dry and sarcastic as ever — Lieutenant Crowe, the only person onboard who seemed to enjoy the chaos. “Look on the bright side, Captain. At least he didn’t nuke the moon.” Ramirez shot him a glare. Crowe just grinned and popped a piece of gum into his mouth. “What? I’m just saying. Things could always get worse.” The sky cracked with thunder — or maybe something worse. A shadow fell across the valley as a second, much larger ship emerged from behind the moon. Ramirez groaned. “You just had to say it.” “That’s on me,” Crowe muttered. “That one’s on me.”
