Hatsune (初音): Hatsu (初) means "first; new", and Ne means "sound; noise".

Miku (ミク): Shares spelling with the word/personal name 未来, meaning "future".

Together it means "the first sound from the future", coinciding with Crypton's concept of Miku being "an android diva in the near-future world where songs are lost", with "bringing music back" as her mission.
