Class Session 2
reyVA for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
I enjoyed your approach to this script. It was a more casual/laid back read, which was a different style. More person next door, realistic read which is great for the current trend in commercials and realistic character reads.
However, the goals of this homework were to focus on energy, projection and articulation. I feel like there was nice energy in your take and you varied it in places, which is good! For another take, I would encourage you to try out even bigger energy with more power and projection. One of the things I learned when I was starting out was that when I thought I was going too big - it really wasn't all that big after all. Don't be afraid to play and step outside your comfort zone. Be bigger than life. Talk to the back of the room for projection. :)
In practicing articulation we want to make sure that we clearly hit all of the sounds in the words and syllables. The reason we practice enunciation and articulation and even exaggerate while practicing these is so it gets our minds and mouths used to not being lazy when we speak, which is very important with voice acting to ensure we are clearly heard and understood. That's why people pay for professional voice overs! :D
Some constructive feedback to help improve your submissions going forward:
- Your audio is panned all the way to the right. Make sure it's centered in your DAW/audio editor and you render your file out in mono rather than stereo. Stereo is useful when there are music and sound effects, but for voice work, we only need mono.
- Your volume is also very low. Try increasing the volume/amplitude and/or normalizing the volume and/or increasing your gain during recording.
0:17 "GGG". If this were a commercial, you would generally want to throw a lot of emphasis and confidence on the company brand (maybe even some warmth like a hug) - after all - that's important (and they're probably the one paying you!). :)
0:51 I liked your change-up / read with the creature voice and the following lines! Nice job!
Be aware of plosive during recording. Talk past the microphone at an angle and not directly into the mic. Have the mic input facing your mouth but offset. Having a pop filter/shield can help to an extent with reducing plosives as well.
1:07 Best-est-est - In another take, I'd encourage you to play with change ups on the second and/or third "est" to put more life and energy into it instead of keeping them all the same sound.
1:18 Rough plosive on "enhanced". I would either do another take on the plosives or try to edit the plosive down.
Overall, good read! Keep practicing and keep up the good work. You will continue to see improvements!
