Lance has alot of military background under his name, he wasn't just any kind of soldier. He was one of the greatest commanders for the UNSC, however during a giant battle with the Rebels Lance lost his daugther. Therefore Lance makes it his mission not only to rescue his daugther but to destroy those who threatened his family. Lance is a more complex leader, his attitude is never off target.
