You don’t have to slate in the beginning unless an audition specifically asks for it. Majority of the time, directors just want to hear if your voice fits with the character and how you perform the audition lines. Regardless, make sure you are projecting your voice a lot more, especially for the scenario of the gym with no microphone. More breath support will allow you to push your voice out more to get enough projection. Adding in some more dynamic choices to really make your audition stand out such as changing up the emotion, tone, inflections, etc. Think about how you want the audience to be really engaged with your words and what you want them to take from this.
