Role assigned to: Bryce Thompson

Derek wishes he had more time for his child, but he has to work so much to pay the bills. He's a lot more laid-back than Anna is, but he loves Charlie just as much. Derek loves to be the teacher and lesson-giver. He takes pride in getting to raise an actual human, his own little human, into a kind and compassionate strong individual, something he wishes the world had more of.

  • What's wrong, string bean? You seem a little off today. You know you can always talk to me, right?

  • That's part of life. What's important is that we LEARN from stuff like this. When you choose to reflect and learn, you grow. Not just big and strong, but up here (pointing to his head). That way, the next time something scary or painful happens, it doesn't hurt so bad.

  • (Faded, a shell of his old self, meaningless words, cold) Because you're strong, string bean. Stronger than me or mommy ever could have dreamed of being.

Thanks for auditioning Rayne! I definitely preferred your second take as it felt more "real." :) I think it's important to break down each project's style, even if you're not entirely sure what that is for a specific project. By that I mean, your first take felt very Anime. Is that bad? No! Not at all! It just unfortunately wouldn't fit here. It would be like putting Dora in a Saw crossover XD "Can you say brutal execution? Say brutal execution!" I was getting a younger vibe from the level of energy and enthusiasm. I also hear a LOT of breath coming through at the end of some of your lines. Be aware of your breath control. I hear that ending breath a LOT with some VAs. Not sure if it's a stylistic choice or just improper breath control, but like I mentioned, I'm not a pro casting director by any means. Make sure you're pulling from your diaphragm and not pushing through your throat. If that's exactly what you were doing and I just made a bad inference, I apologize :)

Thank you so much for auditioning.

lol, yeah my voice is too high for an actual dad role in my opinion. i knew i wasn't gonna get this role. and i wasn't focused on the breathing at all, now that's something ill be looking to take care of. also that is my anime voice, its the voice I'm trying to practice right now. thanks for your time and thanks for the feedback, I've never had any coaching or anything like that. just seeing if there's anything i can improve on

As someone in the mid-high range myself, don't throw away roles because your voice is too high :) I've learned there's more to a voice than the pitch. Think about what they've been through, their energy, their pace. If you imagine a man in his 40s exhausted from work all the time who's been through trial after trial in life, they might talk slower, with more calculation and less energy. That's one interpretation. I definitely think you could pull off older characters! And as far as an anime voice, that one is fantastic. Well done. You're on an awesome path. I mean as many auditions as you've done in such a short time? I'm impressed. Keep going.
