  • Matter-of-fact, offhand comment. Doesn’t care whether the listener follows direction or not.

  • Snapping, angry about his past being brought up. Voice softens at ‘-but it still aches.’

  • Exasperated, annoyed. The listener kept getting in the way of him cooking.
