The Ghosts of Troy
Trinity Somerset for Andromache AND Astyanax
Please note that you have to audition and will have to play THE TWO CHARACTERS. Anyone failing to do so will not be considered.
ANDROMACHE (young adult/adult, female)
Andromaque is a woman who is emotionally devastated: she tries to be strong for her son, but alas, she is only able to raise him with her tears and with the tales of his father.
She is a woman with dignity, upholding herself to high moral standards. She is also very faithful: this only makes her pain worse, as she is haunted by the memory of her dead husband as one would be haunted by a ghost.
In-game, she is painted as a conflicted woman, torn by the dilemma that is falling onto her, knowing she will betray her husband either way (since marrying Pyrrhus is betraying her fidelity; and refusing is killing Hector’s offspring and legacy).
She goes through a lot of emotions: love for her husband and her son, sadness for her situation, horror when she remembers the massacres of Troy, hatred for Pyrrhus… but all these emotions only form in some sort of dignified melancholy.
ASTYANAX (child, boy)
Astyanax only appears as some ghastly thought to his mother in this game, reminding Andromache of her duties towards him when she hesitates to give in to Pyrrhus’ ultimatum and have her son and her die together. He is plaintive, and his pleas add to Andromache’s guilt.
For audition lines:
ANDROMACHE:
“O ashes of a husband! O Trojans! O Father! O my son! How much your days cost your mother!” (Reminiscing, overwhelmed by sadness and pain)
“Ah! this cruel night, that became an eternal night for a whole nation!” (Struck by a memory she languishes in)
“That was how Pyrrhus appeared to me… those were the exploits he crowned himself with… and this is the man I have to marry!” (With growing hatred for Pyrrhus, almost spiteful)
ASTYANAX:
“Fine then, Mother: go see the Greek murder me, they are waiting for you.” (understanding but guilt-tripping)
“If you lived for Hector, why won’t you live for me?” (sad, he feels left out)
