A young officer, Francis Kinchart came to the rescue of a French Officer to take their surrender before they were slain by Ewart. As Ewart turned away, Kinchart was shot by his captive. 

I anticipate this character being some kind of representation of young, pompous, upper-class Scottish, but would also consider him being posh-English who has taken a commission in Scotland.
