Emma was originally a normal child that lived with cruel parents, but ran away from home to live as a street urchin in the Lumiose City alleyways. She banded together with other children and Pokémon that had similar experiences, eventually forming the Lumiose Gang.

Later in the story, she works for Team Flare as Essentia, the masked bounty hunter that moves at the speed of light.
