Taiga is able to communicate with animals (though he can't understand them). He was scooped up by the state in the confusion and has lost contact with his found family. His frequent attempts to runaway and find them have landed him a 'problem chlid' label.

If there was a way to escape this place, I would have found it. It's not fair! I didn't do anything to get stuck in a place full of criminals; nothing criminal about wanting freedom. So, what'd ya do to end up here?
Scared? Scared of what, the school? The teachers are just people diving into a collective midlife crisis. I'm more annoyed than anything.
They've all tangled their roots in city living, so I won't see any of them after graduation. Plus, most of them are too busy tending to their own yards to look over the fence. Not that it makes them bad people, but why bother to perform for an audience that's not watching, y'know?
