Opal is the younger daughter of the town's mysterious mayor. She's kind and typically nervous and naive yet involves herself in most of the things the other children are doing. As nervous as she comes across, there seems to be a cap in just how frightened she'll behave towards certain disturbing things.

Oh, hello, Nash. I was just watering my garden. The plants are already dead but maybe if I water them enough, they'll come back. Sometimes they do. Water doesn't bring people back, though. I heard that's called drowning.
Daddy's not feeling well today so I want to make him some medicine. Medicine isn't hard to make. It's herbs and fruit, isn't it? There are plenty of berries by the creek. They're called "nightshade" so I think they'll help him get a good night's sleep.
