Monsieur Bonacieux, a middle-aged merchant, is D'Artagnan's landlord and approaches D'Artagnan for help when he believes his wife, Madame Bonacieux, has been abducted. When he is arrested by Cardinal Richelieu's men for alleged treason, he proves to be cowardly and willing to say whatever will please the authorities, even when it eventually means betraying his wife by spying for the cardinal.
