Hitohito Tadano is the main male protagonist of the series. He's a socially awkward and shy high school boy at Itan Private High School whose motto is "read the room and avoid trouble." However, this becomes impossible when he's placed in the same class as Komi Shoko, the school's idol; when the teacher has him sit right next to her, everybody in the class suddenly hates him, as they worship Komi as their goddess. Tadano becomes the first friend she's ever made in her life, and also agrees to help her reach her goal of 100 friends before she graduates from high school. An ostensibly average boy, Tadano is the first person who notices that Komi is not aloof and elusive, giving himself a personal goal to help Komi overcome her communication barrier and attain 100 friends. Tadano is the class president of his and Komi's class, both in their first and second years of high school. Tadano has a fair amount of experience in everything he comes across, so if something needs to be done in class, Tadano is given the task because of half having been forced to do it, and half due to the perception that he is able to do it. The fact that he can do almost anything to a certain degree is one of the reasons Komi likes him, and the main reason Najimi abuses their mutual friendship.
