SpongeBob SquarePants Bongo Comics Casting Call Wave 2
John Serrano Voices for Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman is a recurring character in the SpongeBob SquarePants series. He is a ghost with a green glow around him, yellow eyes with black irises, a scraggly beard, a pirate hat with a chunk taken out, a handbag marked "souls", a droopy nose, a coat, little pigtails, and a ghostly tail. He speaks with a West Country pirate accent. Throughout all forms of SpongeBob media, Flying Dutchman has proven to be anything but a friendly ghost. His role in the series varies, ranging from being the demon of the Seven Seas to a restless soul or even as a psychopompic judge of the dead. He has been consistently shown to be gruff, malicious and even downright sadistic, scaring people and stealing their souls simply for fun. Flying Dutchman has also shown to be a notorious womanizer and extremely prideful, easily insulted by the mockery people sometimes make of him. While he is by no means a saint, he has a strong sense of justice and rewards accordingly for those who do good deeds for him, or to punish wicked souls for their wrongdoings. While he has a penchant for striking fear into people's hearts, he is shown to be a dirty coward as well. Despite having reality-bending powers, he refuses to scare a strong and imposing fish, preferring to scare the weak instead.
The Flying Dutchman, in all forms of SpongeBob media, is portrayed by Brian Doyle-Murray. As stated before, the Flying Dutchman speaks with a West Country pirate accent. We appreciate trying to be as accurate to Brian Doyle-Murray's vocal performance as possible.

A typical evil laugh the Flying Dutchman uses when he appears in a scene, or when he's doing something scary. Usually, the evil laugh is the thing that's scary. The laughs here are voice clips from the early 2000s video game SuperSponge. [an evil cackle of sorts] "Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaa!" From the episode Shanghaied. SpongeBob and Patrick have been forced to become The Flying Dutchman's crewmates, and they have just set sail. "What a night be this! Crew, howl with me so that we might set the Seven Seas ablaze with fear!" [howls like a wolf] From the episode "Arrgh!", when the Flying Dutchman is sleeping, and the noise SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs make arguing over the discovered treasure wakes the ghost up. "*snore* I'm the Flying Dutchman. *snores* I'm the Flying Dutchman." [wakes up] "Who dares wake the Flying Dutchman?" [looks out his window, yells] "Keep it down, will ya? I'm trying to get some sleep!"
All of these lines are from the episode Scaredy Pants, when the Flying Dutchman was first introduced [in a scary, threatening, thunderous voice] "You bet your lily-white livers, I'm the Flying Dutchman. And I'll let you in a little secret." [immediately shifts to a quieter, semi-whisper with a tooth-eating grin on his ghostly face] "I'm gonna steal your souls." [Back to that thunderous, threatening voice. Additionally, when speaking about how insulting it is that people have made his namesake a laughing stock, he sounds offended, which adds to his anger] “Quiet! You had it coming, you little crybabies! Every year, people dressing like me. Turning the Flying Dutchman name into a laughing stock. But that's not the reason I'm taking your souls.” [approaches SpongeBob, who is wearing his “Flying Dutchman” costume.] “No, THIS is the straw that broke the camel's back. Out of all the Dutchman costumes I've seen, yours is the most insulting.” [to SpongeBob, about to laugh] "You? Scary?" [cackles, then speaks casually] "Let me tell you about scary, kid. There's all kinds of scary things in the world. Spiders are scary. Uhh, I'm scary. You... you're not scary. Okay, let's get this over with." [immediately shifts into an evil cackling laugh]
All of these lines are from the episode “Your Shoe’s Untied”. [in his loud, threatening voice] "So, you want to tie knots, do ya? Well, do ya!" [speaks casually and proudly] “Then you've come to the right flying ghost, kid.” [begins to yell again, this time in a boasting manner] “You're looking at the first place winner in the fancy knottin' contest for the last 3,000 years!” [laughs] “I don't know how to tie me shoes. I haven't worn shoes for over 5,000 years!” [casually, almost with childlike enthusiasm] “But sometimes I like to wear this little sock over me ghostly tail.”
