Asgore is a kind monster that enjoys gardening, Golden Flower Tea and Toriel's butterscotch pie. He speaks in southern jargon (most notably "howdy" and "golly").
Asgore lives in the past and wants nothing more than to see his wife and child again, even though they have been gone for a long time. He reiterates the same phrase in his journal every day, perhaps in denial that life has changed after Asriel's demise.
Monsters also note that he is bad at naming places and names location quite literally, and Gerson suggests this may be because Asgore is not the most intellectual monster.
"Human... it was nice to meet you. Goodbye." -Asgore, before fights the protagonist in the Neutral/Pacifist route.
"Now, now. There's no need to fight. Why not settle this... over a nice cup of tea?" -Asgore, meeting the protagonist in the Genocide route.
"I remember the day after my son died. The entire underground was devoid of hope. The future has been once again been taken away by the humans. In a fit of anger, I declared war. I said I would destroy any human that came here. I would use their souls to become godlike... and free us from this terrible prison. And let the monsters rule the surface, in peace. Soon, people's hopes returned. My wife, however, became disgusted with my actions. She left this place, never to be seen again. Truthfully, I do not want power. I do not want to hurt anyone. I just want to see my wife. I just want to see my child. Please... young one... This war has gone long enough. You have the power... take my soul and, leave this cursed place." -Asgore, after being (almost) defeated by the protagonist in the Neutral/Pacifist route.
