  • "No Such Thing"

Traveler (North American accent, any gender, any ethnicity)

Line 1:  Listen, whoever you are, you can go straight to hell!

Line 2: All right, I’ll have a drink. Enduring rudeness is preferable to going back out into this weather.

Line 3: Samhain again. Look, I get it, okay? There’s probably not much to do around here, not many new faces turning up in your barely-a-wide-place-in-the-road backwater, so you’re having a little fun with the stranger from America—

    Local (Scottish accent, gender, ethnicity)

Line 1: An American! I should have realized! I thought you were stupid, but you’re simply an American!

Line 2:  Samhain is what you would call Halloween. It’s the night when the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead is at its thinnest and all manner of beings are abroad: ghosts, faeries, demons, each intent on doing mischief. Woe betide the mortal who encounters one of them without having taken proper precautions.

Line 3:  According to the tale, every seven years, on Samhain night, the faeries must send a mortal to hell as a sacrifice. On the day marking his seventh year of captivity, Tam Lin suspected that he was the one who had been chosen for that sacrifice. But he was rescued by the heroic efforts of a mortal woman. The details need not concern you. What matters is that the Queen of the Faeries was so angered by Tam Lin’s escape that she took great pains to ensure such a thing could never happen again. And it never has.

    "The Pit in the Forest"

JOSH, male, high-school junior or senior

Line 1:  No, I’m pretty sure it’s not a sinkhole. Look how round and smooth-sided it is. Sinkholes are random collapses, very, you know, rough. I’d say this pit was excavated by someone. Sage, you’re the archeology fanatic—what do you think?

Line 2:  Guys, hey, listen up, okay? Let’s not argue. Look, it’s already getting dark, and there’s no way we’re going to be able to hike out of here at night. It was hard enough getting through these woods in daylight. And this is the only decent clearing for miles. Let’s just make the best of it and pitch camp like we planned, okay? We can clear out at first light. We agreed about this, right? We’re here. What’s one night?

Line 3: Mmmmmm. Oh, man. Tara, you wouldn’t believe the dream I was just— (freaking out) What the hell?! Daniel? Daniel, is that really you? I—

SAGE, female, high-school junior or senior

Line 1: Thank God! I thought this hiking crap would never end.

Line 2: Yeah, Eddie, and I can’t believe we let Josh talk us into following him out here. Talk about crazy!

Line 3: Yeah, Eddie—stop being such a douche bag. Be refined, like Tara, who would never say anything gross . . . like “douche bag.”

EDDIE, male, high-school junior or senior

Line 1:  Awesome! I had no clue this was out here. Josh, I can’t believe you saw this place in some crazy dream!

Line 2:  Well, Sage, it looks like we’re not the only crazy ones. Someone’s been here before. Look at all this stuff laying around. Looks like a tornado sucked up everything from a Goodwill store and dumped it all out here around this . . . this pit.

Line 3: Gee, Tara, I didn’t know you cared. Heads up, Josh, I think your girlfriend wants to do me.

TARA, female, high-school junior or senior

Line 1:  Okay, can you guys maybe just cool your jets for a minute? This whole situation is creeping me out a little, okay? First Josh has a dream about his dead friend Daniel—

Line 2:  Yeah, and then Josh dreams Daniel’s in some pit, and we find out that the freaking pit actually exists, and . . . and I don’t know, I just need a little quiet time to get my head around what’s going on here.

Line 3: Camp here?! Are you kidding?

DANIEL, male, high-school junior or senior

    Line 1:  Daniel? Daniel is what this . . . vessel . . . was called? Yes . . . I have a dim . . . recollection. . .and you . . . are with . . . Josh? You are . . . Tara?

    Line 2:  Your . . . exertions are . . . wasted. That vessel—Josh--cannot awaken until . . . permission . . . is granted. I do not . . . choose . . . to grant such permission unless--

    Line 3: So you . . . Tara . . . will take Josh’s place among . .. Those Who Dwell Beneath, out of . . . love?
