I have a manual bass control on my headset, and if I turn it almost completely off (RARELY does that make -anything- sound okay) you sound actually pretty good. Definitely look into audacity- it's free. You can select that opening empty bit of space and press delete on your keyboard to get rid of it. You can also lower some of that bass sound and maybe create the illusion that your mic is great. ;)
