When I younger I saw a tweet of the creators of a videogame I like saying they were hoping to add voice work to their game, and they were doing an open call for voice actors. I sent an email of a recording I made on my crappy laptop with a dinky ps4 headset. I didn't get the role I auditioned for, which wasn't surprising, but what was surprising was the email I received back from the person in charge of casting for the company- giving me well-worded feedback and compliments on my work and mentioning tips to continue in the voice-over industry. I was inspired, and I've been doing VA work trying to work up a portfolio since!
