The Mermaid is a character who appears at the end of episode 3 with bad intentions (no spoilers!). Why she does what she does, we'll soon find out, but she has her own motivations.
The Mermaid, at first, is pretty emotionless/disinterested when she talks. Her demeanor is definitely a serious one. However, as the series progresses and through talking and bonding with main character Lena, she does warm up a little bit, but her serious and flat affectation doesn't vary too much, unless in drastic situations. She's also prone to be incredibly violent.
