Afrien was the partner of great magician Freud and king of the Onyx, a race of powerful dragons.
During the previous battle with the Black Mage, the Onyx Dragon race was struck with a terrible curse by the Black Mage after his defeat. One that would destroy all the Dragon eggs and send all the living Dragons into a deep, long slumber, Afrien sealed away, effectively ending the Onyx dynasty… Almost. Beforehand, Afrien tells an adventurer to bring him the last Onyx Dragon Egg, where it will travel with Freud when he wakes up.
In Heroes of Maple, he is found by Evan, successor of Freud, and Mir, his heir to the Onyx dynasty. Afrien explains to them why he had been waiting in Slumbering Dragon Island for so long, and to deliver a message from Freud to answer the questions Evan and Mir had on their new responsibilities as great magician and heir to the Onyx respectively.
Cult of Personality: A proud, dignified ruler of the powerful Onyx Dragon race, down to the near extinction of his race, and to his own end. Even in the short time Mir had been alive and had spent with his master, Afrien expressed his pride for seeking him out and for taking responsibility as the sole heir to the Onyx Dragons. He shows to have had a great deal of patience, having waited for so long to deliver Freud’s message to the heroes. He also shows tremendous integrity when refusing Damien’s offer of new life and immortality, so he wouldn’t be enslaved.
There's no need for tears, I'm not dead yet... Hah... You are right Aran. I am most aware of my condition. But you need not fear, I will not allow myself to become a puppet to their will. I will end things on my own terms, before it comes to that.
And you, Damien, did you, a mere demon, think you could break the will of a mighty dragon? You can take my life. However, you will not take my will.
Mir, I am so very proud of how you have grown... Go. And never forget, the pride of the Onyx...
