Growing up I went to a large public high school with thousands of students.

I knew the names of all the kids in my classes, but certainly not everyone in my entire grade. Going to a big school was definitely daunting at times but I stuck to my close-knit friend group and things went okay. After graduation I went to a large state university about an hour from where I grew up; it was the same college a lot of people from my high school also attended.

I was studying to become a teacher: my first class of the day was the literature class. 

I didn't want to be late on my first day so I got to the classroom well ahead of time.

I glanced around the classroom in hopes of seeing a familiar face but didn't recognize anyone. I told myself I would just have to work on making friends, I grabbed a seat towards the back of the class and scoped out the situation.
