Tar, you've got an awesome voice. If you don't mind me saying (And speaking as someone who has this issue as well and is trying to improve himself, too) try sitting or standing in a more relaxed position, close your eyes, put yourself in the mind of that character, and speak more naturally. What I've noticed (Or am guessing anyway) we both tend to do is we tend to hunch up a little and speak rather quietly, but close to the mic. This ends up making a loud recording, but it sounds a little too reserved for the situation - As opposed to how one would normally speak in such a situation - loud and clear enough to be heard across the room.
