The narrator is intended to be someone with a gentle disposition- almost as if the narrator him or herself has met the "Matchstick Man", and that the poem is recounting who this person is, almost like a vague memory. Ideally, the performance is warm, knowing, and feels slightly like a children's book narration. 

  • "The Matchstick Man, who believes the clock strikes twelve on the eleventh hour, as if to believe Mozart's metronome thunders through the skies, parting the clouds."

  • "He wraps himself around his kindling fire, ensuring that his second wind is not blown away by another." 

  • "If you are to ever meet the Matchstick Man, do tell him that there is plenty more work to do, and matches burn rather quickly."
