Wei Wuxian is the protagonist of the series. He is an intelligent, bright, optimistic, mischievous but good-hearted cultivator, whose intelligence and strength lie more in his ability to invent new spiritual techniques and inventions not defined by conventional cultivation methods. He was a former disciple of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng and later created the Demonic Path, thus earning him the title of Yiling Patriarch. He died in the First Siege of the Burial Mounds, which is thirteen years prior to the start of the story. He was then summoned into the body of Mo Xuanyu through a sacrificial ritual. He travels with Lan Wangji to discover the identity of the person a left arm belonged to.
I added Mo Xuanyu since he only has a few lines at the very beginning of episode 1, and the same voice actor in the original did his lines.
[Episode 1]
[Wei Ying awakens in the world of the living. He looks into a trough of water to see that he has been reincarnated into the body of another. He is shocked by this and by the summoning circle on the ground.]
"This is... the forbidden ritual by offering one's body by self-mutilation. This bloody array... Can't imagine how miserable he was to think of carving up his body for the ritual. All for the sake of summoning a devilish overload of carnage. But I'm not on that list." [He chuckles.] "Maybe he really is mad after all."
[Episode 1]
[Wei Ying is at a pond washing his face off and complicating his new body and chance at life.]
"This face isn't half bad. Why mess it up with ghastly makeup? Well then, since I'm a lunatic now, might as well have some fun. How do I act like one anyway?" [Looks down at his arm where three scars are.] "However, this offering ritual was long lost. Where could Mo Xuanyu possibly learn it from? Summoning my soul in specific, no less! My reputation wasn't great indeed, but I never haunted the living or sought revenge. I'm anything but vicious." [Spots special flags set up by cultivators.] "Spirit Lure Flags. The cultivation clans wanted me dead, but see no problem putting my inventions to use. Spirit Lure Flags require living humans as bait. Looks like those youths from the Lan Clan plan to use themselves as bait to lure in the zombies and vile creatures nearby then vanquish them all."
[Episode 1]
[Wei Ying puts on the act of a lunatic to not only mess with Mo's abusive family, but also embarrass them in front of visiting guests. The servants try to catch him as he runs and causes a ruckus. He's basically having way too much fun playing the act.]
[Laughing and jeering as servants chase him.] "Go away! Go away! I wanna play! I'm not leaving! I just won't! Come catch me! Catch me!" [Trips and is caught by one of the visitors. Continues his act.] "Is it you who hid my stuff away?" [Mo's family orders servants to drag him away, but he clings to a pillar.] "I'm not leaving! Not leaving! I'll leave as you wish, as long as he returns my stolen stuff." [Mo's cousin denies stealing from him.] "Yeah, yeah, yeah! You didn't steal. You robbed! Not only did you rob me, you did it in the middle of the night! Shameless!" [Dodges a chair thrown at him, and cowards behind a visitor.] "Murder! Murder!"
