ANTIETAM: A Civil War Battle Documentary
KyleF for Colonel Phillip Work, 1st Texas [CONFEDERATE]
Colonel Philip Work commanded The 1st Texas Infantry during The Battle of Antietam, which was part of John Bell Hood's Division. Hood's Division launched a counter-attack down Dunker Church Ridge which routed the Federal advance, causing them to retreat back toward Miller's Cornfield. The Texas Brigade, which included Philip Work's Regiment, became separated from Hood's main division, and advanced headlong into the cornfield. Barely being able to see in front of them, Work's men were massacred as Union soldiers launched various counter-attacks into the cornfield.
In these quotes, Philip Work is referring to the dramatic fight for control of Miller's Cornfield, recalling the bloody engagement and the loss of his men.
“The Regiment of its own notion, and on one accord, advanced. Loading and firing at will, unmindful of the galling and deadly fire into its ranks. Colonel Philip Work, commanding The 1st Texas Infantry.”
“Falling back to the Southwest limit of the corn, we rallied upon our battle flags; its bearers were all shot down, and we returned without them. Colonel Philip Work.”
