Young Rin Matsuoka. Seemingly a hot head in his older years, but he's really just misunderstood. His goal is to become an Olympic swimmer in order to achieve a dream that his father couldn't due to the demands of raising a family. He decided to go abroad to Australia in order to train at a swimming school in Sydney, up until his return to Japan when the events of the show start.

"*gasp of air from coming out of the water* You’re just as fast as the rumors said! What was your time?"
[Makoto asks him if he's swimming in the relay, as Rin just dropped the bomb that he's going to Australia]
"I’ll swim in the relay. I’m leaving the day after the tournament, so this will be the last time the four of us will swim together."
"That’s why you have to swim in the relay. This is our last chance… so let’s swim together, Nanase. If you come and swim with me, I’ll show you a sight you’ve never seen before!"
