When most in the United States think of a Dalmatian, they immediately associate the breed with firefighting. In fact, this spotted companion has been used as a dog of war, hunting, a guard dog and of course it’s been used in firefighting.
Dr. Bruce Cattanach stated “The relationship of deafness with white coat colour and blue eyes is therefore clear.
The fewer the number and the more limited pigment cell spread, the greater the proportion of the coat lacking these cells and appearing white.
There is also the greater risk of pigment cells being absent from the stria of one or both ears to result in unilateral or bilateral deafness.” [In plain English the lack of spots, and blue eyes, is a sign of a Dalmatian being deaf in one or both ears.]
In addition to being protective of their loved ones, Dalmatians, are kind, loyal, and easy to train. They love outdoor activities, water, and should make great companions for those who have a very active lifestyle.
