Kaiji Itou is the protagonist of the series. Kaiji, although somewhat hopeless and depressed, is incredibly perseverent despite how unfairly the world treats him. Kaiji tends to convey a wide range of emotions from happiness and carelessness to sorrowful and anxious. This character is often witty but also has many moments where he sounds utterly defeated even though this might not exactly be the case.
