It seems like you aren't fully comfortable doing that voice maybe (even if its not for this role) try removing some of the rasp, and try using your diaphragm more. I'm not great at this myself just a few things I'd like to point out.

There is not much information about Max in the comic. However, Max is a dog Radar, and belongs to Jack. When Jack calls Bijou cute, Max gets upset. When Jack tells Max he hasn't forgotten about him, Max immediately perks up. Max loves his Jack very dearly, and treasures his every word.
Voice: Kinda gruff
