Jhalo is a minor recurring character in Memoirs of the Abyss, appearing as one of the new World Encounters. He is a legendary fighter - not a monk, but a strange nomad soul who fuels his incredible strength and will with, paradoxically, strong booze.  The potential health implications are, understandably, astronomically awful, yet he seems keen to share his knowledge with a diligent student...

His voice should be deep and bold, with an accent originating from any North American state.

  • "There's a lot to be learned from the bottom of your mug - a whole lesson. You know what? That's lesson one, right there. Your mug's empty- it shouldn't be.  Lesson two - always carry a REALLY heavy mug. It's the first thing in your hand when you're attacked, if you're doing this right."

(Jhalo is giving his strange brand of combat advice to somebody. He seems genuinely invested in being a good, noble mentor figure, but also sounds somewhat like he is making up his curriculum on the spot and is struggling to prioritise which tips to share first.)

  • "That's where you come in, lil' bee. You're gonna flatten her ON MY BEHALF." [pause, with a long drink] " 'Cause payment. This is your chance to cough up by making someone else cough up for you - their innards, Divines willing."

(In this line, Jhalo is very suddenly, and very casually, insinuating that his 'student' needs to now beat someone up on his behalf in order to compensate him for his services. He sounds incredibly nonchalant about the whole affair, as if it's perfectly normal and expected.)

  • "If I wasn't spiritually nailed to this table, Aphid, I'd be right there beside you, running the full laps. Well, probably riding 'em on a horse. But I'd be giving you that encouragement *aaaaall* the way - you know I would. So make a mini-me in your head - a me away from me, to shout at you *for me*. *You hear me?*"

(Jhalo is trying to explain his own laziness in not helping his student out on an exercise run. As he starts using the word 'me' a lot, he begins to sound like he's getting himself confused, but doesn't stop to correct himself at any point or allow doubt that he's talking any sense.)

Agreed! The southern drawl was too tempting to resist. Pretty sure it slipped in to my audition as well.
