Analytical Essay Mistakes Made by Students

Writing an analytical essay may seem easy, but this is
where most students end up making mistakes. Students usually underestimate the difficulty level of an analytical essay. For writing an effective analytical
essay, students are required to read between the lines.

In an analytical essay, students do an in-depth dissection of their subject. They
sometimes have to review other sources as well in order to write their
analysis. While crafting an analysis, a student is not just an essay writer but an analytic. Especially the students from social sciences are required to write this type of essay during their academic life.

Summarizing

The most common mistake that students make in an analytical
essay is that they rephrase and summarize the subject of their analysis.
Students fail to understand that there is a difference between reviewing the
subject of study and analyzing it. Sometimes students also confuse an
analytical essay with a critical essay. Although the two have some overlapping
elements, they are fundamentally different. In an analytical essay, one usually
tries to infer the meanings that are not directly stated, but in a critical
essay, the tools and devices are assessed that are employed to convey the
meaning. An analytical essay requires the writer to read between the lines, but
rephrasing shows that the student has only done a superficial reading instead
of thoroughly understanding the text.

Irrelevant Details

Despite the fact that students make very valid arguments
and find the right evidence to support their argument, they tend to add details
that are not directly linked to their main ideas. This practice weakens the
strength of their argument and the coherence of their analytical essay. The
best solution to this problem is to make an outline before writing the Analytical Essay. It is important to have an outline prepared for any essay, but the
chances for students to deviate from their main argument are many times more in analytical essays.

Repetition

Since an author’s primary argument is the same throughout
an analytical essay, he has to restate his main argument repeatedly. Using the
same words to refer to your main idea actually makes your analytical essay dull
to read. Also, repetition occurs in analytical essays when students are unable
to back their claim with evidence from the original source. It usually happens
for two reasons, either the students have not thoroughly gone through the
subject of their analysis or have failed to grab the meaning from the source to
be analyzed. Students are required to read through the text multiple times to
resolve this problem. They must not write in their essay what does not make
sense to them.

Structuring

Associated with the problem of repetition and irrelevance
is the problem of structuring. Both repetition and addition of irrelevant
details disturb the structure of an analytical essay. Students usually
designate large sections of their essays to summarize the source text. This
practice also disturbs the structure of the essay. The essay must have a clear
introduction, few body paragraphs that support the argument by tying the claim
with evidence, and a conclusion to emphasize your main idea. A good outline and
an effective thesis statement can help the writers to maintain the structure of
their analytical essay.

No one is skillful at writing essays since the beginning. I made some of the
above-mentioned mistakes myself while I used to provide essay writing service, especially an analytical essay. But being able to
identify my mistakes actually helped me correct them.

These are the
common mistakes that are usually made by students when they write an analytical
essay. They also sometimes let their bias interfere with their rationality, and
it brings subjectivity to their analysis. I hope that knowing about these
common mistakes may help them too, as they helped me.
