Thirteen: A Fallout Podcast (Session 2)
Project Overview
Introduction
Thirteen: A Fallout Podcast is a fan-made podcast drama, telling the story of the original Vault Dweller from Fallout 1. The original Fallout game was a turn-based pseudo-isometric CRPG (computer roleplaying game) released in 1997. Very different from the Fallout games today's audience is more accustomed to (Fallout 3, 4, 76), many fans have not experienced the adventure that started it all. Thirteen's mission is to turn that story into a format digestible for all.
This session of casting is for characters appearing in Vault 13, Shady Sands, and Junktown. (Aka characters who are introduced in the first six episodes.) This includes the lead roles of Albert, Ian and Tycho, along with many other memorable characters!

Requirements/What To Expect
- Some of the characters in Fallout 1 were voiced in the original game. If this is the case, a link to their clips will be included in the audition slide. While we do not expect the voice to be exact, we would like for it to be close/recognizable as that character! Characters who were not voiced in the game are up to interpretation - have fun!
- Please ensure that your microphone is capable of recording your performance without picking up overwhelming background noises or excessive peaking/clipping. (ie: ACs, fans, etc)
- We may occasionally ask for a line-redo. Please don't take offense! We will try to instruct you if there is a certain way we would like a line reflected ahead of time, but there may be a time or two where we will ask for a second take.
- Please submit your auditions as MP3. For final takes for the production itself, we ask for WAVs. Please name your files for the production "Episode # - CHARACTER NAME". We are not picky about the method of submitting: you may email to us (we will provide an email address after casting), send a Dropbox link, however is easiest for you!
- This is an UNPAID role.
- You will receive verbal credit at the end of each episode for your work.
- Roles are tagged by [Lead], [Reoccurring], and [Guest Appearance]. A lead character will appear in multiple episodes in the series. Reoccurring means a character will appear in more than one episode. (Usually 2-4, depending.) Guest Appearance means the character will appear in one episode, and may have few lines.
- You are welcome to audition for more than one character!
Closing
The deadline for submissions is NOVEMBER 19th, 2022. At that time, we will make our decision and contact our choices! Again, please keep an eye out for the next set of auditions, which will include roles for The Hub, Necropolis and the rebels of Vault 13. A third later audition will include the roles for Lost Hills, LA Boneyard, the Cathedral, and Mariposa. ( Lead. 21 yrs old. ) The Vault Dweller himself. Albert is a charismatic young man with a dream: to see the world beyond the vault. When the opportunity to step out into the sunlight is offered, he accepts willingly… but finds that life in the Wasteland is harder than he ever thought possible. Albert should pass as a younger version of Elder Albert, the narrator of the story: listen
(awestruck) “It’s incredible. I always imagined there might be people living out here, but to actually see it…!”
“Look, I understand your position. You don’t know me, you don’t trust me. I get that. But I mean no harm to you or your community. I’m simply trying to save my own. Please, perhaps there is something I could do for you - a show of good will?”
(angry/anguish) “He didn’t deserve it! He didn’t deserve it, and it’s my fault he was there! His blood is on my hands!”
( Lead, 33yrs old.) The Vault Dweller’s first companion and greatest friend, Ian gives up his life in Shady Sands to journey the Wasteland with Albert to find the water chip. A former caravan/town guard, he is independent, headstrong, and experienced in the ways of the wasteland. As an ‘older brother’ figure to Albert, Ian tries his best to prepare the Vault Dweller for the dangers lurking beyond the safety of Vault 13.
(stern) “Listen to me! If you keep yanking rocks like that, all you'll get out of it is a rockslide that will bury you with it. There's no way we'll make it through all that. I'm sorry."
“Compared to the rats? Yeah. Compared to other wasteland beasties? There’s far bigger.”
“Sometimes we have to take a life to protect ourselves and others. Even then, we’re still snuffing out a life all the same. Someone who probably has friends, family, people they care about to mourn them. It doesn’t get easier, Al, and it shouldn’t. It’s a hefty price to pay.”
(Lead. 38yrs old.) The second of Albert’s companions, Tycho is a survivalist and former Desert Ranger from the Nevada area. Level-headed and strategic, he serves as a father figure in Albert’s journey, getting him through the trials - both emotional and physical - that the Wasteland hurdles at them.
“Not my place. I'd rather not cross Killian. He'll clean up this town when he gets around to it. He's a good man. Can't say the same about Gizmo, though."
"My grandfather used to be a Texas Ranger way back when, and he taught my father everything he knew. Dad passed it on to me. So I know enough not to drink glowing water, so to speak."
“Nuclear armageddon was the result of pride and foolishness. Now, we're paying the price.”
(Reoccurring, M) The strict and paternalistic Overseer of Vault 13. Terrified of the outside world, Jacoren strives to keep people happy and complacent in the vault for their own safety. He cares greatly for his community, and tries to do his best by them… but the life of an Overseer involves secrets, and includes difficult choices that must be made to secure the future of the vault. “We've got a problem, a big one. The controller chip for our water purification system has given up the ghost. Can't make a new one and the process is too complicated for a work around system. Simply put, we're running out of drinking water. No water, no Vault.”
“I realize it’s… quite a surprise. I wish there was another way, I do. But believe me when I say it’s absolutely necessary for the continued success of the vault.”
(Reoccurring, F) A Russian vault dweller from Vault 13, Natalia is one of the candidates selected to possibly take on the mission of finding a water chip. Though she won’t admit it, she too shares the dream of seeing life beyond the vault. Steely and closed-off from most, she refuses to join rebel meetings out of devotion to the Overseer and the future of the Vault.

(hesitant) “Go…? What do you mean, ‘go?’ Go where?”
(stern) “The Overseer is simply trying to protect us. His laws are the only thing saving the Vault from misery and destruction.”
(Reoccurring, M) The wise and charismatic leader of Shady Sands is a fountain of inspirational quotes. Events occurring in his town as of late have made him suspicious of newcomers, leaving him weary of who they might be working for. He is incredibly overprotective of his daughter Tandi, who is the light of his life. Originally voiced by Tony Shalhoub: listen
(suspicious) “Wanderer, I shall believe you, for now. You are welcome here in Shady Sands, but be warned that your every move will be watched. 'Caution is life in troubled times.’ Your origin is not the issue. Your intent is.”
(surprised) “You would do this? Put yourself in harm’s way for my daughter? You realize they may not be willing to speak. They may kill you on sight.”
(Reoccurring, F) Daughter of Aredesh, Tandi is a young woman tired of settlement living, who yearns for adventure and excitement outside the walls of Shady Sands. Sharp witted and smarter than she seems, she is convinced that the Vault Dweller will one day become a true hero of the wasteland, and has no problem telling him such. “Man. That’s lucky; not that you got shot, I mean, but that it wasn’t any worse than this. One of our guards got shot through the arm once. He can’t use it right anymore.”
"Relax. Look, I just wanted to say again... thank you. For rescuing me. And for mixing things up a little in our quaint little town. The change was nice."
(Reoccurring, M) The gruff leader of the security force in Shady Sands. Devoted to maintaining the safety of the community, Seth has his hands full with the increasing attacks from Radscorpions, as well as those from the local raider gangs. Seeking a light drawl in voice.
(grumbling) “They’ve put a fair few of us out of commission. Not a week goes by that someone doesn't get poisoned or slashed up trying to keep them out of the pens.”
“We all want Tandi back safely. But we have to go into this with our heads on straight. The Khans are a great force to be reckoned with; we can’t just march up there and expect to win with nothing but our emotions driving us.”
(Guest Appearance, M) The doctor of Shady Sands. Like most in Shady Sands, Razlo has his hands full thanks to the constant attacks on the community. Kind, knowledgeable and precise, the good doctor is the key to the Radscorpions’ destruction.
“Not too much. They seem to be extremely large versions of the North American Emperor scorpion — how such a large creature can even be possible by natural evolution - or even radiation induced mutation - is beyond me. Contrary to my medical knowledge, their poison has grown more potent, not diluted, as I would expect. They seem to be sensitive to light. Nocturnal; they’ve only ever attacked at night.”
(Reoccurring, F) Town greeter and assistant to Aredesh, Katrina goes about her tasks with a smile, spreading cheer to those around her in the toughest of times.
“For goodness sake, don’t aim that thing at him, Seth. Look at him, poor ragged fellow. Probably hasn’t had a real meal in days!”
(giggles) “I suppose you could say that. He’s our leader, and a true hero. If not for him, I doubt we would have a Shady Sands at all.”
(Guest Appearance, M) Leader of the Khans. Formerly a vault dweller from Vault 15, Garl aided his father in robbing their former home, only to later kill him and take over their gang himself. Bloodthirsty and violent, he chooses to only surround himself with those who are as extreme as he is, making the Khans a dangerous enemy to have.
“Look at him! Skin soft as a baby’s ass. Not a scar to be seen. I only accept the meanest and toughest. You have to be bloodthirsty, violent, extreme! (scoffs) I don’t think you can handle that, do you?”
“We don’t let just anybody in. You’ll have to prove yourself.”
(Guest Appearance, F) Second in command to the Khans, Gwen is often found by Garl’s side. Unlike her leader, who is happy to bring in anyone as extreme and violent as himself, Gwen is more suspicious of potential newbies, and often serves as the rational side of gang management and recruitment.
“He looks fresh from the vault. Look at him, he’s wearing a vault suit for crying out loud.”
“It's been so long since I've had a good fight. I will be doing the world a favor by killing you, coward!”
(Guest Appearance, F) Quartermistress to the Khans, Diana just wants to bury herself in her work, uninterested in the violent aspect of gang life. With the Khans providing protection and endless tasks to focus on, she is happy to serve under Garl’s rule at her forge.
(amused) “Well aren’t you polite. We don’t usually bother with such pleasantries.”
“Well, you better hammer out that softness before meeting Garl. He has no use for pushovers.”
(Reoccurring, M) The crime lord of Junktown. A “fat bully of a slob”, Gizmo is manipulative and greedy, seeking to take control of Junktown away from Killian Darkwater for himself. He owns or has a hand in most operations in town, and all information makes it back to him eventually. Originally voiced by Jim Cummings: listen
"I don't know who you are, but I don't take kindly to strangers just walking into my office. (pause) Still, such a move takes guts. I like that. What's your game?"
"So it comes down to this, Killian. Well, I never could put up with your stink, and now I'm gonna put an end to it!"
(Reoccurring, M) Major of Junktown and owner of the General Store, Killian Darkwater wages a never-ending war on crime in the streets of his city. Locals call him a “hard, strong man who acts fairly and does all he can to protect his citizens.” Originally portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson: listen
"Name's Killian. Killian Darkwater. I'm the mayor of this fine town. And who might you be?"
"He wants to run the town. With me out, he can get away with anything he wants. But that's not going to happen. My grandfather founded this town, and I'll be damned if I let it fall into Gizmo's grubby hands."
(Guest Appearance, M) A boxer in Gizmo’s ring, Saul risks his life daily in rigged matches, oblivious to his girlfriend Trish’s worries for his health.
"You're pretty sharp. Yeah, I threw the match. It's... kind of part of the gig."
(defensive) "Hey, when I get up there, I give it all I got. (pause) Up until I have to fold, anyway. I still love the sport, I still feel the rush... but is it satisfying at the end of the match? I suppose not."
(Reoccurring, M) As the head guard in Junktown, Lars constantly has his hands full dealing with Gizmo, the Skuls, and the other lowlifes in town. Hardened by experience, he leads Killian’s guard force in a no-nonsense manner, but finds himself constantly frustrated by the lack of evidence with which to put Gizmo and his goons away for good.
"Well, looks like you're clear, Neal. Shark started it, you defended Trish and your business. Can't fault you for that. (sigh) Gizmo and the Skulz aren't going to be happy about all this. Still, it's one less of them out on the streets."
"Well, off with you then; I'm sure you have business to attend to. If you happen to see anything suspicious around town though, you know where to find me."
(Guest Appearance, M) The gate guard of Junktown, Kalnor lays down the law for any newcomers traveling into the city.
"Weapons stay in their holsters, boys. Junktown is a friendly place, and we want to keep it that way."
"The place for that kind of thing is Darkwater's. If there's a... water chip you said? in Junktown, it would be there."
(Guest Appearance, M) As the only doctor in Junktown, Morbid is free to run his practice as he sees fit - which means nickeling and dimeing his patients for his services. Though he is a competent and well-learned physician, there are rumors floating through the wastelands that he ‘deals in the dead’.
(irritable) "You're bleeding on my floors. Sit down there and hold this to your nose. Don't move, don't touch anything - this is expensive equipment."
"I hope you have a good reason for disturbing me. My time is extremely valuable."
(Guest Appearance, M) Morbid’s loyal assistant, Gretch the dwarf works behind the scenes on the doctor’s more… illegal projects. Being slow on the uptake, however, he tends to be a little loose lipped about his boss’s plans.
“Parts almost ready to go to the Hub. For Bob to sell.”
"Doc Morbid has the best bodies around. None better. For Bob to sell, to eat."
(Guest appearance, M) An insecure patron of Sinthia’s services who holds her hostage in the Crash House.
"Don't come any closer. Don't touch that door! I'll off her. I swear."
"What world do you live in? Out here in the real world, blood flows, man. Besides, she's just a whore. Why do you care?"
(Guest Appearance, M) Antagonistic and brash, Shark is a member of a gang in Junktown called the Skulz. His hobbies include filing his teeth into points, and provoking others into fights they can’t win.
"Hey, fresh bait! What brings you in to our territory, chum?"
"You got lucky today, shrimp. Next time will be different."
(Guest Appearance, F) The only female member of the Skulz, Sherry plays the role of tough-girl well enough, dedicated to her gang’s cause and the ‘family’ they’ve created. Despite this, she finds the monotony of their day to day life to be dull, and this fact may be enough to make her reconsider her loyalty.

"Oh, we're like a family! We take care of each other. (pause) Well, except for Shark; he, well I guess used to, break things - usually bones. And Victor, who looks at people funny; he stalks them sometimes, calls it a game. And Shiv is lazy and likes to sit around and drink all the time. But Vinnie is cool - he's the boss. We do stuff together. You know, we're like friends and stuff."
(Guest Appearance, M) As owner and bartender of the Skum Pitt, Neal is a no-nonsense man who demands respect of his customers, unwilling to allow the bar he started with his late wife to become a degenerate hellhole. He is especially fond of his employee Trish, who has been with him through the hardest of times.
(angry) "Get the hell outta here you goddamn punks! If any of ya ever touch her again I'll kill the whole lot o' ya!"
"I'm the only bar in town, save Gizmo's fancy whatever he has in the Casino. Of course I get trouble from his lowlifes. They've been trying to scare me into selling to that fat lard. Not a chance!"
(Reoccurring, F) Waitress at the Skum Pitt, Trish is a kind young woman with a lot on her mind. Nearly at her breaking point, she worries for her overzealous boss Neal, who openly challenges trouble, and for her boyfriend Saul, who is employed at Gizmo’s boxing ring.
"Sorry 'bout the wait, boys. Name's Trish. What can I getcha?"
“One day, some punk is going to kill Neal for a glass of water or something stupid like that. (pause) I didn't want to be a widow."
(Guest Appearance, M) A grumpy old man who has been chased off his property by a mangy stray dog.
"He ran afoul of Gizmo. Got beat up by casino security before getting tossed off the roof. Broke his damnfool neck and died. The dog's been pissed ever since."
"Careful, that beast will snap your fingers right off, I'm telling you!"
(Reoccurring, F) Owner and matron of The Crash House. Marcelles is a no-nonsense woman, equipped with her own shotgun to take care of business as needed.
(upset) "Thank god; it's awful! Some... crazy man has Sinthia held hostage in her room! He's threatening to kill her!"
(amused) “Just caught him in one of the back rooms this morning. When the wasteland provides, you take advantage of it!"
(Guest Appearance, F) A sellbaby working under Gizmo’s employ, Sinthia is a provocative young woman who knows how to get what she wants. Despite this, she hates her job and the trouble it brings, but believes she has few other options in town.
(through tears) "Thank you for what you did. No one's ever taken care of me that way before. (sniffle) I mean, my boss couldn't even be bothered to send any of his goons to help me!"
"We haven't been properly introduced. (flirty) I'm Sinthia - with an S.I.N."
(Reoccurring, M, M, F) Children of Arroyo, who plead with Elder Albert to tell them of his adventures. Seeking three young voices!
“Blast you vault dweller! Just wait until my mutant army arrives!”
“I’m the legendary Vault Dweller! And I’m about to rid us of the Master and his mutants forever! Pew!”
“Elder! Tell us the story. The one where you saved the Wasteland!”
Looking for someone with musical talent to create a short (15-20 sec) theme for the show, that invokes familiarity of the original theme.
