Class Session 1
Samantha Binkley for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
For a first read, that is pretty impressive stuff. Disregarding that you're about as quiet as the mouse before christmas sneaking off with santa's cookies, your delivery was clean and there were very few mistakes in the script itself. That said, please don't be afraid of flubing in the homework. We're here to help you through the mistakes too! Seeing how and where you struggle lets us give you feedback on how to shore up those weakpoints and recover mid-take.
Let's talk about air support. Good reads need air, and humans gotta breathe to get that air. Voice actors need to watch our breathes. If you need to breathe, make sure to put a break in the read itself so your breath does not bleed into line delivery. When you take a large breath straight into the script that obscures some of your delivery and that can *not* be easily cleaned in the edit. It is much better to place full stop pauses around your breathes so they don't interfere with the read at all. Gasping into the lines adds quite a bit of tension to the read and can break up an otherwise calming tone.
Going on to projection, we were at a comfy 2/10 for most of the read, I know it was a take 1 and we were using the set up for the first time so I'll give you a little slack. Get that volume up! Take longer, more purposeful breathing breaks. Fill up your lung and abdominal cavity. Imagine yourself filling up an entire stadium with your voice and drawing everyone's attention and holding it for the read! I want to see you get up to a 6/10 and hold and dominate a room full of people! Don't be shy, we're voice actors. Screaming into microphones is all we do here!
A wonderful read and great start to thing Samantha, looking forward to hearing more of your voice! (Get loud!)
