Sakaki Yuya is an eighth grader who aims to become an "Entertainment Duelist". At You Show Duel School, he practices Action Duel every day alongside his childhood friend, Yuzu. One day, he receives a written invitation for an exhibition match from the Pro Duelist, "Strong Ishijima". In the middle of a giant cheer, Yuya and Strong Ishijima begin their Duel! Although Yuya excitedly fends off Ishijima's attacks in their Action Duel, he's eventually pushed into a corner. At that moment, a dazzling light shines from Yuya's pendulum!
Strong Ishijima is a the champion of the Pro League. Ishijima was due to Duel the current Champion, Yusho Sakaki, but Yusho never showed up, much to his fury. He loses to Yuya when Pendulum summoning is created.

One of Yuya's friends; he isn't actually a You Show student due to being the heir to his family's dojo, but seems to hang around there a lot. He's an advocate of a method of Dueling he calls "Steadfast Dueling", which is taught by his family's dojo; basically the exact opposite of Action Dueling, it discourages unnecessary movement. Reflecting this, Gongenzaka's Superheavy Samurai deck has no Spell or Trap cards at all, and many of his monster effects can only be activated when he has no S/T in his Graveyard. They can also attack while in defense position, using their DEF points for damage calculation. Under the tutelage of Yaiba, he adds Synchro monsters to his deck. As a member of the Lancers, he adds the Superheavy General sub-archetype of Pendulum Monsters to his deck.

The heroine of Arc-Vand Yuya's childhood friend, she is the daughter of You Show Duel School's headmaster. Where Yuya is energetic and upbeat, she is more rational, though rather quick to lose her temper. She has a habit of whacking people, particularly her father and Yuya, with a paper fan whenever she's annoyed with them. While never outright stated, there are plenty of hints of her being in love with Yuya, which are also hinted to be mutual.

Nico Smiley is Strong Ishijima's manager. He is responsible for inviting Yuya to duel Ishijima, and thus allowing Yuya to discover Pendulum summoning. He later comes back and is responsible for helping Yuya get into the Junior Youth Championship.
