Tomorrow's Fatal Flaw (Chapters 1-5)

Tomorrow's Fatal Flaw (Chapters 1-5)

Project Overview

I had the idea of trying to make an audio book version of one of my ongoing stories. Here's the description for the story:

"Station Detective-Sergeant Gilbert Pudget has a dream. That dream? To reach the rank of Detective-Inspector. When the promotion is stolen from him even after his attempt to thwart the advances of his competition, he decides to repeat his attempt in an effort to remove Detective-Inspector Alexander Nels from the game. Will he succeed? And if he does, will he regret it?"

The story is set in 1939, months before WWII.

It can be read here: https://www.wattpad.com/story/54289495-tomorrow's-fatal-flaw
However, those cast will be given a PDF version to work with, one that has character's dialogue highlighted for ease.

If you're at all interested in my story, feel free to audition for a role in the audio version!
As for the quality of this so-called audio book, I'll try my best to throw it together nicely. I've never done this before, though, so... yeah.

Feel free to fire me an email if you have any questions!

Requirements:
- Good quality audio is preferred (however, if you don't have a good microphone, I'm sure I can work some editing magic somehow)
- Must be easy to contact if chosen for a role (preferably via e-mail, however Skype also accepted)
- Must be dedicated enough to get lines to me quickly and efficiently, and also able to work on the project for a long time (given most of that time will be simply waiting for another chapter to be ready)

Voice: Light and friendly, with a moderate British accent.

The waitress that appears in chapter 5. She'll probably reappear in the story eventually, though I'm not entirely sure when.

  • (repeating orders as she hands them to the customers) One "glass of cold milk with a little bit of coffee and a lot of sugar" and one cup of black-as-night coffee.

Voice: Moderate or thick British accent. Suave and smooth, but manly.

Pudget has been trying and trying to earn a promotion to the rank of Station Detective-Inspector, be it by lying and making crimes himself. However, even after setting Nels up for failure, the promotion still fell upon the other man's shoulders, leaving Pudget fuming and scheming away.

Manipulative and deceitful, though only if he desires something that he believes to be otherwise out of his reach.
When not determined to get what he wants, he can actually be rather kind, caring about those around him like no other (if they're on his good side).
He's rather intelligent, figuring out quickly how to wrap himself around someone's head in order to trick them.

  • I heard about your last case. I just don't see why everyone's getting so hostile over it.

  • I'm sure Nels is on his way over right now, Miss Gentry. But until he arrives, why don't you tell *me* what the problem is?

  • (manipulative/suave) Sweet Carmilla, the boy was innocent. [Nels] doesn't seem particularly phased by that, either. Why, just this afternoon, he told me the boy deserved his fate regardless.

Voice: Moderate or thick British accent. Light and smooth. Calm and almost soothing to the ears.

After watching a suspect he pinned down, a young boy, be executed, it was revealed to Nels that the boy was innocent. However, he got the promotion to Detective-Inspector anyway, which led him to confusion and uncertainty.

Though his mood can change rather abruptly at times, Nels is typically well composed and calm. He tends to think about what he does and says before he does or says it, preferring rationality over rashness.
Caring to those in need
, but lacks confidence that what he's doing is always the right thing.

  • I sentenced an *innocent* boy to his death. I can't believe they had the gall to keep me on the force, never mind promote me. What did I do to deserve a promotion? Commit murder?

  • Don't apologize, Miss Gentry. I may have no idea what you're going through right now, but I know it must be tough. I promise you, I will do anything I can to help track down your son.

  • Look, sir. Honestly, I know you're lying. There's no way you *don't* know Mr. Heathrow. In fact, because you're lying to me, I can't help but assume he's in this very pub.

Either gender and any age is fine.
Just a small role with two words in the first chapter. Really, this could be double cast, but meh.

This role is screaming in hatred at Nels because Nels executed some innocent kid.

  • (anger/disgust, shout) Filthy pig!

Carmilla Gentry

Voice: Faint British accent. Sultry and deep, the voice of a strong, somewhat flirtatious woman. Melodic as well, if possible, since she is a singer (however, the actress for this part very likely will not be required to sing.)

Coming from a rich family, Carmilla is a millionaire and a singer. She's become quite famous in the UK, and is the single mother of a loving son. Despite not always being around for him with her career in mind, she loves him dearly.

Rather feminist
in certain ways, Carmilla doesn't take kindly to gentlemen that pity her for being female. She likes her men somewhat "rude", causing her to prefer Nels over Pudget. She's self-sufficient and tough, but can be flirty at times.

  • (impatient) I appreciate the offer, Sergeant, but in all honesty, I would prefer to save my breath and explain why I'm here to both you and Inspector Nels at the same time.

  • (explaining what she keeps in her wall safe) Some cheques and some cash. I don't trust the bank to keep my funds entirely in check, so I take some of it out every now and then and hold onto it myself. I've certainly got enough to spare for it.

  • (vaguely flirtatious) Fair enough. However, I'm fairly certain that your performance will be absolutely marvellous.

Voice: I'd prefer a unique accent. By unique, I mean anything but British.

A taxi driver from chapter 4. He's got one line.

  • Hey, have you guys heard the news? We could be looking at another world war.

Voice: Tough and burly. Raw. He drops his H's when he talks. Maybe he's got a French accent? Ha ha.

The bartender and owner of The Clumsy Trespasser, a local bar that Nels and Pudget go to in chapter 4. He might appear again in the story, I'm not *too* sure.

  • Nope. I dunno who you are, but I aint never [h]eard of anyone by the name of [H]eathrow.

  • W-well, I... The name musta... The name musta reminded me of this poster we got today. Some wanted poster. (Nels asks about it) Yea. Just [h]ung it up. You can take a look if y'want, I dont care.

Voice: Slurred and drunk

Some homeless guy that walks by in chapter 1 and grumbles at Nels. He hates him too. Jesus, word gets around.

Voice: Raw and intimidating. New Jersey accent, thick or not, I don't mind.

Michael Heathrow is a big, muscular guy. He's tough, and he's got one hell of a criminal record, so he's probably been to prison a couple of times, too. He's pretty much always angry, or at least always annoyed.

I plan to have him come back in the story sometime, but I'm not sure when.

  • (intimidating) Yeah, and I don't take lightly when people who've got no business with me think they do.

  • You little smartarse, I'm gonna knock that mouth right off your noggin.

  • What a bloody moron. Someone get this bastard out of my sight.
