Jeff: Hi I’m Jeff Evans, a retired Mack trucker
Jeff: As
I am sure you all remember from last week because you follow our podcasts so
diligently, just waiting with anticipation for it to be released every week, we
were talking about the expansions Mack’s Macungie Plant is undergoing with its
71-million-dollar upgrade. The upgrades will not only make the company more
competitive globally but increase its output to other countries. Mack’s are now
available in more than 45 countries around the world and they hope to increase
this even more drastically. I was amazed when I saw that number, because back in
my day Mack’s were maybe in 20 different countries. International trading has
boomed it seemed overnight. I swear it was just last year I was driving a Mack
truck and not just talking about them with you Alex. Anyway, we thought it
would be great to share just a few of the many stories about Mack going global.
A truck that was made here in Macungie Pa and has gone and done everything. But
before we get to that, Alex want to share our sponsor.

Wayne: Every truck made here serves a purpose
out there, beyond this plant. The employee’s pour their blood and sweat and
even tears into these trucks. My names Wayne, and I have personally worked at
Mack’s Macungie plant in Pennsylvania for over 15 years, I have seen so many
trucks pass through those doors at the end of the assembly line. They head out
to take on the world in a variety of tasks. I always thought it would be cool
to track a truck and hear its story on leaving the assembly line and starting
its new life in the unknown.

Don is from the Mid-West, slight accent. 30 years old,

Don: It’s been some beautiful weather in January in North
Wisconsin, we have been above freezing hitting 40 degrees most day this week. A
little cloudy a little rainy but I am not going to argue with that in January.
Been nice having clear roads, mornings have been a little icy but later in the
afternoon not too bad. Having a pretty good week, and on Thursday I was coming
back from one of my stops. I was on a back-country road, coming around a corner
and there are a bunch of turkeys crossing the road. I don’t swerve my Mack, beer
truck for much and turkeys are not something I would swerve for, lay on the
horn, let off the throttle, peddle a little bit. Most clear off the road, but
there are few at the side of a road in a ditch who decide hey we can fly. Boom,
boom, boom, three no longer live anymore. Lost a headlight, cracked a grill,
cracked my air dam on top, visor over the windshield suffered some damage and
my right windshield took a toast. Thankfully it was a split windshield and it
didn’t completely shatter, just spider webbed a bit. You know it’s a little
nerve racking know I didn’t do anything wrong, but I’m going to limp this truck
home. My names Don and I am Mack Trucker.

Elena: My mother is always telling everyone
she knows my daughter, Elena she drives a truck. I’m a member of the DSNY Strongest
which for those who don’t know is “The New York City Department of Sanitation”.
It’s my job to not only keep the city clean but also safe and that wouldn’t be
possible without my Mack Truck. I am an emergency responder and work under the
environmental Police unit. On
New Year’s Eve 2016, I was one of hundreds of workers who drove my Mack with
its dump body filled with sand to add mass to form a protective blockade around
Times Square. The trucks provide a dense, protective
barrier in the event of a bombing. It is part of comprehensive antiterrorism
strategies law-enforcement officials deploy to ensure public safety.

Phillip, around 35 years of age, very proud of Mack and going to the arctic

Phillip:
My name is Phillip and this is where I
say Mack has been to the Arctic and back, now there’s not something you can say
about all trucking companies. I was recently part of a convoy which included 11
giant Mack Trucks where we drove vital equipment to the heart of the artic for
the radar stations so important for the defense of the western hemisphere. The
arctic was truly a land of beauty and hidden danger. We had many incidents
where we had a truck drive into hidden rivers, deep snow swallow parts of
trucks, and a truly terrifying event when the arctic ocean cracked and almost
ate up one of the trucks. In the end, all of us in the convoy had to depend on
each other and our machines. This was a
true test of the heart and spirit of Mack and its durability as we delivered
cement and steel to the radar station and the only reason we succeeded was
because of the courage of the men on the team and the reliability of the Mack
Trucks which took us from civilization to the heart of the unknown.

Sahil: My name is Sahil and I work six days a week,
so I need a vehicle that I can rely on to get the job done. My Mack Truck has
been through Hell and made it back, with just a few dents to show for it. I
live in rural India and I often drive on roads made up of dirt with some sand
mixed in. I am a trucker in India, a father to two beautiful little girls and I
am often on the road for weeks on end leaving my wife and children home alone
with her mother. A fact that my wife never lets me forget about when I do come
home. I’ve been driving for 14 years and know several other men who drive trucks
and always have issues with their trucks, especially from the sand. But for me,
no such problems. My Mack is reliable and dependable always getting me home to
my family

Heather is a tough cookie, around 30 years old, not afraid to get dirty

Heather:
I am a Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girl, and for those who don’t know, Pilbara is a
region in northern Western Australia. I’ve worked in the transport industry for
25 years and spent the last ten training drivers. People always ask me,
Heather, why did you become a truck driver and I always respond with I love
this job and I want as many people as possible to experience it. It really is a
fantastic job and we have the most remarkable people. I tell the trainees they
are the cornerstones of society. Don't ever say you are a dumbass truck driver.
Without trucks, we don't have a society. I started out driving trucks in
Karratha as a single mum, I could be on the road and still home-school my two
girls in the cab. Now I am preparing the next generation of truck Drivers.
Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girl recently was gifted with two prime movers as part of
an initiative to tackle Australia’s current problems with driver recruitment
and retention in the trucking industry. I drive an instantly recognizable truck, a bright pink Mack Super-Liner. I am a girl, in the Wild West, playing with big
toys.
