The Principles of Unnatural Selection - Magic Story Audio Drama

The Principles of Unnatural Selection - Magic Story Audio Drama

Project Overview

As Wizards of the Coast continues to release their weekly Magic Story updates, it is our goal on the Voice of All podcast to bring these stories to life through audio.

The Ravnica Allegiance stories have begun! Just like the previous set we have small vignettes of life on Ravnica. This week we follow a school of merfolk and their teacher Medge as they learn about the ocean, fight a ghost, and discover lost artifacts . Our main character is also our narrator this week so if you are prepared for that, read on! You can check out this story in full here:

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/principles-unnatural-selection-2019-02-06

If you're interested in hearing our past works, you can listen to all of them here:

https://www.voiceofallmtg.com/

We can also be found on Soundcloud, Stitcher, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Podcasts! We are looking to keep up with the release of Wizards' stories as best as possible and will release our version the second following Friday, so expect to be cast this week and have your lines to me within a few days.

As a general casting note, I do not typically have any voice requirements in mind for characters. I would much rather hear your interpretations and choose from among them.

Medge

Role assigned to: AshK

Medge is a teacher of her fellow merfolk. She lives in the ocean and has never been to the surface, content to teach future generations important values - knowledge, courage, observation, and empathy. The Simic, the Guild she is in, as a whole are about cultivating nature and improving on it. In recent years this is focused heavily on genetic mutations, which she is against on principle.

Medge is also the narrator of this tale, so in addition to her in character lines, you will need to read narration for the story - about 15 pages (~6000 words) in total.

  • "No touching, Miko. Please stop acting like an upworlder and reserve some respect for your elders."

  • "Greetings, Ptero. You're looking dapper. Don't tell me . . . trimmed your fins?" [Annoyed. Her rival teacher has shown up to grandstand.]

  • [Narration test] I expect some merfolk prankster to swim out. I wouldn't put it above Ptero to orchestrate such an awful ruse, but when a figure emerges from the mangled collection of waterlogged wood that once was the stern of the ship, chills ravage me through and through. It's a portly figure, well-built for the near-freezing temperatures of these deep waters, clad in a simple gray frock. It has no discernable fins. Human, perhaps. I've seen a few such curious creatures, but they all either had genetic modifications or clunky apparatus to breathe beneath the water. They were awkward swimmers and moved with the grace of a drunken seahorse. This human doesn't move like that, though. Doesn't move much at all, in fact, but it's steadily coming nearer. A school of spooked angel barbs makes an escape from our intrusion, barreling right through the human's body, which now seems less substantial than jellyflesh.

Role assigned to: chicha3maddy

Kaszira is a young merfolk girl in Medge's class. She is quiet and brooding and slouches a lot. She is smart and very observant, but doesn't like drawing attention to herself. Over the course of the story, she begins to show empathy and a more outgoing nature as she finds something she can be passionate about.

  • "Seven weeks. That's how long the elder monk has been meditating." [Flatly stated. She's been quietly calculating this in her head]

  • "He's scared, can't you see? Down here, all alone for years and years Just give him a moment to warm up. To remember what it's like to be with other people."

  • "We know the spells. We're ready to use them. Is it not our calling to protect the creatures that need protecting?" [Gaining confidence. She's found a cause to fight for]

Role assigned to: Temeraire

Ptero is Medge's rival teacher. He's very into genetic modification as a means to make himself and his students better. He's confident, popular, cocky, but not unable to show humility.

  • [laughing] "Still teaching about fasting bands? I thought they'd nixed that from the curriculum centuries ago."

  • "Well, I'm sure you have plenty of time to spend one-on-one with your pupils. A blessing from the old sea gods, for sure! I've got my claws completely full now that my class is absolutely brimming with students. Only sixty-two protectorate positions are open this year, and twenty-four of mine are sure bets—masters of empathy, courage, and observation. But now that I've gotten a good look at the competition, I'm thinking I can place all of them."

  • "Maybe next year we can team up; tend our clutches together. We can assure we're sending the best and brightest out to be our ocean's protectors." [More conciliatory, happy to work with his former rival]

Speaker Zegana

Role assigned to: savannahsveta

Speaker Zegana is a merfolk politician. Previously the Prime Speaker for the Simic Combine, she still works as the Speaker for Zonot 5 (like moving from being President back to being a Senator). She is clever, capable, and conveniently Kaszira's aunt.

Being an important character in Magic lore, Zegana is likely to appear again in future stories. Should she do so, you will be asked to reprise the role.

  • "Kaszira, my niece. I have spoken with your parents, and they have expressed extreme displeasure with your actions here."

  • "I'm afraid 'sorry' isn't going to undo the damage you have wrought. You and your friends are to return to merfolk territory immediately and are hereby banned from the zonots."

Andrik

Role assigned to: clbroyles

Andrik is a ghost who's been at the bottom of the ocean for 80 years. In truth he is a pirate whose spirit was tied to his ship when it fell through a sinkhole. Through most of the story he pretends that he was but a humble merchant who just needs help getting his ship (with all its riches) to the surface.

  •  "I am seaman Andrik, most unfortunate sole survivor of the Heckless. Ship was sunk by pirates, long ago. Sat at the bottom of the river for decades, my only pleasure watching the glimmer of sunlight reaching through the blue. Sad sight it was, but I didn't know how good I had it, until the riverbed started sinking, sinking. Swallowed the whole ship and me with it, down a hole and into this here dark and wretched hellscape. I'd given up on seeing a living soul some time ago."

  • "My conscience is too heavy, I fear. The remains of the crew are still aboard this ship, and I wouldn't feel fit making that journey without them. It's my sole wish that their families can see them to a proper burial."

  • "Put that down, fish." [Angry and threatening]

cast offsite

Miko is a another merfolk in Medge's class. He's not very good at his schoolwork, but he is the class clown and revels in making the rest laugh and poking around where he shouldn't.

  • "Are you sure he's not dead?" [Poking a meditating merfolk]

  • "Wasn't me. I think it came from inside the wreck." [Not his fault, for once]

  • "I kind of liked him better when he was just moaning." [About the ghost]

Chessa

Role assigned to: FayeHoward

Chessa is Medge's star pupil. She's very smart and enjoys her teachers attention. She's nervous though and working to find her courage.

  • "I was going to say that! I swear on my grandmother's gills!"

  • "The risks are too great, Tender Medge. How will we get the ship past the krasis?" [scared]

  • "I'd toss this overboard, but you don't deserve the honor of resting upon the ocean floor." [Angry at the ghost who lied to them]
